The Florida Atlantic football team completed their second day of fall camp at the Schmidt Family Complex on a sunny Friday afternoon. They focused on building on the successes while fixing the errors committed from the first session. “We made a huge improvement from day one, which is good, but it is not where we to be at yet,” safety Armani Eli-Adams said. Offensive lineman Chaz Neal commented that the first two days had noticeable differences for the players at his position. “Yesterday, we moved around a lot. Today, it’s just having more consistency and communication. As long as we communicate, we should be good to go from there,” Neal said. Here are some notes from today’s media availability. OwlBytes for August 4th Quarterback Rotation In Progress At the start of the session, coaches had the offense come together which likely showed the current top options at the quarterback spot. Casey Thompson (pictured above, blue jersey) and Daniel Richardson alternated spots during the drill, probably indicating their roles as the main players vying for the starting job. Thompson appeared to have excellent composure leading the snaps behind the offensive line, and Richardson showcased quick decision-making with the available choices he had throughout the drill. Decision-Making in Motion The quarterbacks had two options during another one of their drills; they could either hand the ball off to the running back while the wide receiver goes in motion, or they can throw the ball to a receiver on a vertical route while a staff assistant tries to block the throw with a towel to challenge the receiver. Thompson was smooth and accurate with his throws and solidly timed the handoffs to the running backs, while Richardson had great reaction times on when to throw to a receiver or hand off the ball for most of his reps. Manning The O-Line During the drill with the offense joined together, the offensive line also showed who could be the starters for the opening week of the season. Chaz Neal, Kamaar Bell, Federico Maranges, Dorian Hinton, and Wallace Unamba were among the players who practiced with what is possibly the first offensive unit. “We all hang around each other a lot so the chemistry is there. It’s just the wanting the initiation to do it and forming our chemistry to better the team,” Neal said. Star Watch: RB Larry McCammon III – McCammon III (pictured below) handled his drills with ease throughout the day. Displaying his experience as a veteran on the team, his movement was fluid as he was in sync with the quarterbacks when they practiced their rushing drills together. He is coming off a breakout 2022 campaign where he finished with 1,004 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. He also received First-Team All-AAC preseason honors from Phil Steele’s Magazine and Athlon Magazine and is on the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award. Final Word Today revolved around making correction to the errors made during the first session while introducing potential rotations for the offense. Eli-Adams conceded that the Owls have plenty of work to do that involves making the right decisions. As they begin to fit the pieces together, the Owls’ potential of having a strong starting rotation will grow in the process.
