Softball: Owls Split Unconventional Doubleheader With Iowa

Owls Win Second Game, Lose First Game Delayed by Protest Florida Atlantic split a doubleheader with Iowa on Thursday night. FAU had runners on first and second base with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jessica Myers slapped a ball to the Hawkeye first baseman, Katie Brown. Brown appeared to lose control of the ball at she used it to tag first base and subsequently allowed Ambar Jones to score and Taylor Fawbush to advance to third. A lengthy discussion ensued, pausing game action for approximately 45 minutes. It was ruled that Myers was safe and Jones’ run counted putting FAU ahead 1-0. The rest of the game was played under protest by Iowa. Rose Gressley had a single to center that scored Fawbush and Myers, giving the Owls a 3-0 lead. However, after the game, Iowa’s protest was upheld it was decided that the game would be resumed after the completion of the second game. In the second game, Iowa went ahead 1-0 on back to back base hits. FAU threatened in both the fourth and fifth innings, but didn’t score until Blair Bodenmiller drove in Kerri Croney and Myers on a two-run base hit to right in the bottom of the sixth. The Hawkeyes responded immediately, scoring two runs in the tip of the seventh to take a 3-2 lead. FAU tied the game in the home half of the inning when Brittany Walker stole home. After retiring Iowa in the top of the eighth, the Owls won the game on a Hawkeye fielding error. The first game was immediately resumed as a scoreless tie at the start of the sixth inning. Iowa scored in that half inning to take a 1-0 lead. Bodenmiller lead off the bottom of the seventh with a solo homerun to left field that tied the score. Iowa scored in the top of the ninth and retired the Owls in the bottom half to salvage the split. FAU travels to Clearwater, FL on Friday to take part in the USF-The Game Invitational where they will play Syracuse and Illinois at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. respectively.
