Following their victory over Tulane and Charlotte’s loss to regular-season champions USF, the Owls currently are second in the conference. They can clinch that seed by outright winning their last two games, or winning one and Charlotte losing one. Vlad Goldin being in outstanding form has come at a great time for FAU. He had his fifth outing in six games with 20+ points and his fourth in a row against Tulane. During that stretch, he is averaging 19.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks on 64.7% shooting from the field and 73.8% from the free-throw line. Jalen Gaffney and Nick Boyd (pictured below via Rick Henderson) provided significant impacts with their roles throughout last Saturday’s win against the Green Wave. Gaffney had his first double-digit outing since January 14th with 13 points, and Boyd bounced back with 10 points and seven rebounds following a two-point display against Memphis. The latter is also making 38.5% of his three-point attempts over the last five games. Solid performances from Johnell Davis and Alijah Martin should be on the radar. Davis saw his streak of scoring in double-digits end against Tulane and may look to bounce back with an offensive explosion, while Martin is coming off a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds as he plans on continuing his assertiveness in getting inside the paint and crashing the glass. FAU returns to Boca Raton and will rest for a few days before they host Memphis for their conference finale on March 9th at 12:00 PM EST. The matchup will be broadcast on CBS. Their offense has been clicking with their last two games seeing them score 80 or more points, the first time since 2012 that they were able to do it in consecutive conference games. They are benefitting from the return of key player Rubin Jones, who missed 11 of the first 13 conference games due to a hamstring injury. He’s averaging 17 points and six assists per game over his team’s last two. This added dimension to their offense has allowed them to beat opponents by convincing margins while continuing to suffocate them on defense. They still have the best defense in The American at 62 points allowed per game, which ranks them as the seventh-best in the country. They are also 21st in field-goal percentage defense at 40.4% and 67th in three-point percentage defense at 31.6%. Jason Edwards remains the top option for the Mean Green offense. He is third in the AAC in scoring with 18.6 points, fifth in free-throw percentage at 82.3%, and 12th in three-point percentage at 36.5%. He is still a volume shooter from deep, having attempted 200 triples as he and John Buggs III (46.7% on 107 attempts) are the best perimeter shooters to give North Texas the 29th-best three-point percentage in the nation. FAU should also be wary of Aaron Scott and Robert Allen when they’re on the court for the Mean Green. Scott leads the team in blocks with 41, averaging the fourth-most in the league per game. Allen is a key rebounder with 7.2 boards off the bench, presenting himself as a factor the Owls must nullify with Vlad Goldin, Giancarlo Rosado, and Brenen Lorient boxing him out at all times. Following this matchup, North Texas will head over to Houston for their last regular-season matchup with Rice on March 9th at 8:00 PM EST. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
