I think were still one step from that.

Wasn’t his dream Big East/ACC?

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

Big East...which basically became the AAC.

Basically. Sad they allowed themselves to be reduced from the so called "Power" group.

If I were a removed /reduced school, I would have filed for economic and reputational harm for Billions!

Not that long ago they WERE one of the Power Conferences!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's the Sentinel article from 10 years ago, and of course this was after C-USA snubbed us and he was somewhat being retaliatory in nature, but still:

Howard Schnellenberger sees Florida Atlantic in the Big East

Also, the Big East commissioner at the time was Mike Aresco. Why does that name sound familiar…

Maybe because he is the current commissioner of the AAC.

Very excited for this move. May not be a P5 but surely feels larger than G5.  Just looking at bowl affiliations is enough to make one feel that way, along with the success of their teams vs the rest of the G5.  As long as AAC can maintain 2-3 teams in top 25 as it did much of this season, it will only get better and maybe eventually it will become a P6.

Aresco is the commissioner because the Big East became the AAC: Former Big East to be named American Athletic Conference

Schnellenberger was spot on: Schnellenberger said FAU would be in the Big East (now AAC) in 10 years from 2012 and we did it in exactly that time frame.

He also said we would win a national championship within 25 years from the program’s formation and we just so happened to get Tom Herman and take ucf (the 2017 national champion) place in the AAC. Perhaps the stars are aligning….

No doubt this is the premier G5 and close to a P6. Especially when the new playoff format kicks in it will become even clearer.

Just my 2 cents but I am extremely excited about the move up, the level of competition, and quality of play. I also believe it’s the best G5 conference. Saying all that, I don’t believe this is the old Big East. It just ceases to exist anymore. Back then you had powers such as Miami, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, etc. In basketball there was UConn, Georgetown, etc. I would say the present day ACC would be closest comparable. Either way, we should all be happy as it’s a step up and hopefully leads us to another step up in the not too distant future.

I remember the talk of eventually joining the Big East -- IN 1998 BEFORE WE EVEN HAD A TEAM
