Florida Atlantic added their first running back in the Class of 2024 with the commitment of Kaden Shields-Dutton. He made his declaration on Wednesday afternoon, giving the Owls plenty to be optimistic about when he arrives.
"As a junior, backed up Texas signee Cedrick Baxter Jr. at Edgewater, which went 12-1 in Florida’s 3M classification," said 247Sports' Andrew Ivins. "Carried the ball 62 times for 421 yards and 7 TD."
His highlights from 2022 can be seen below:
Making the announcement in a first-person exclusive to the Palm Beach Post, Shields-Dutton said his father wanted him to play soccer before ultimately siding with football since he was eight years old.
"For most people that’s late. Most people start playing at 5 or 6. I just remember my first day out there hitting. I was scared. I was one of the softest out there," Shields-Dutton said.
"But I went that night and I worked on it. The next day I was making people quit. From that point on, I realized if I could keep working and set myself up to succeed, the sky is the limit. I always wanted to make it."
He said FAU gave him the most love out of anybody, especially when he found out head coach Tom Herman was going to take charge of the program.
"When I found out that coach Herman was just hired, that just means I’m definitely one of the guys they want. That made me go, 'This is a guy I want to talk to and wouldn’t mind playing for.'"
"Coach Herman is going to set me up for success. He said he’s not going to let me or my parents down. He’s going to let me showcase my talents and try to get people to the NFL. I’ve seen what he’s done in the past and he can do the same thing for me."
Shields-Dutton is now the ninth member of FAU's expanding 2024 class. His talent had 247Sports rate him as a three-star recruit with an 85 score, which is the highest among the Owls' recruits.
He picked the Owls over Marshall, Western Kentucky, Central Michigan, and Eastern Kentucky among others.
