Transfer Portal

Post

Or like with the Texas A&M WR that left last year, someone told me he is on NIL instead of a scholarship at Ole Miss…

Bottom line is every year there are HUNDREDS who enter the portal who are left without a team when it all shakes out.

I mean hopefully they're leaving because we're bringing in better players, and they'll go to a place that can scholarship them so they can get an education and playing time. I don't feel like Taggart recruited that great, and I'm interested to see TH's season with a full recruiting cycle and his own guys having a little time to develop in his scheme. I'm optimistic about this season, although I'd like to see more being done through the portal than what I've seen so far.

Bringing in talent from smaller schools or building up high school guys is a better system that all power 5 rejects. Tom Herman said himself last year that he doesn’t want this being “transfer portal U.” Taggart had plenty of “flashy” names just to go 5-7 in cusa. while majority of Kiffin’s playmakers were Partridge recruits.

In 2024 there is no such thing of developing a high school player with the expectation that your hard work and time will pay off. It's cheaper and more successful to use the portal. This is what will be the downfall of small and mid size programs. It's a shame

I would completely agree with you 10 years ago. But now, you can recruit a high school guy and he's just going to bounce to a better NIL deal through the portal, so you can't rely on high school recruiting and development anymore. I mean look at our basketball team. Went to the Final Four, then back to March Madness, and most of them left when Dusty did.

You can't be competitive in the modern college football landscape without using the portal to successfully supplement your high school recruits.

Also, I totally agree that the portal is terrible in it's current construct. It hinders development and stability, and is detrimental to the G5 programs since it's created basically a JV level for development before being recruited to a P5 program.

But it's reality, and if we keep trying to pretend it's not, we're going to suffer.

BINGO. Hopefully the golf tournament that the NIL team put together raised some funds.
