My 2 cents. Dusty was a no name coach when he came to FAU. He had no history as a head coach. He thought he committed career suicide when he saw the gym. It must have been really bad at the time. He still was able to recruit a team in a few years that made the final 4, even with underwhelming facilities. I don't know how he did it. I'm sure it was hard to recruit once players saw the facilities. He returned to the tourney this year. We beat ranked teams this year and last year. If I'm not mistaken, we only beat a ranked team once prior. We were ranked much of the season. Dusty coached a team to the final 4 and lost going to the finals by .5 seconds. I think Dusty is a good coach. I hope he stays. This season was a strange one. I just don't see how we can beat Arizona, Texas A&M and Virginia Tech then lose to Bryant, followed by FGCU. Something happened. Maybe Dusty will write a book and tell what happened.
I don't know what to say about the last two games. Maybe the strategy or lack of strategy will be told, sometime.
I don't see Davis or Martin getting drafted. I do think that Davis will enter the portal this year. He could get picked up by a P5 program.
If Dusty leaves say goodbye to most of the team. The only ones that do not leave are the guys that never play.
The word is out about the facilities. After Dusty told his story i would think the world knows about it so no surprises.Posted On: Mar 23rd 2024, 6:44 PM #422845
He built something from nothing and that’s hard to do but if we told him do it in 3 years or get fired he would have failed. We were flexible we gave him time, he had winning seasons but it’s not like they were 25+ games like say a Bryce Drew or Shaka Smart. Look on espn and see Dusty lost many close games in his career by 3 points or less about 30ish games.
I think like I mentioned before he expected teams to lay down and lose and they saw our game as their Super Bowl and did anything in their power to win. He won with a collective of different talents and skill sets but can he coach a 5 star player who is a god in front of Boosters, who knows. I feel he will see very soon that he doesn’t not control as much as it seems.
The only draftable player is Goldin period. Johnell is skilled, but that’s it he lacks the quickness and athleticism that can help him create his shot. At the next level he will get blocked a lot and will be out paced. He would be a serviceable off the bench kind of guy not. Martin has the athleticism and has an nba built and can shoot, can be a good off the bench guy with great plays for a team. Martin took a huge step back, he didn’t play hungry. If running on all cylinders Martin is our best player, but seemed to lack the leadership and was very lazy on his efforts. Then a does not want a lazy backup. Long story short these guys regressed and did not work on growing.
I think a fresh coach with a new mindset with everything we have to work with now can build something fast especially with the portal. I am telling you I feel Dusty’s tactics are too vanilla, it took AAC teams to figure out how to beat us. He will be 3 years tops at any program he chooses.
