In a game that featured six lead changes, it would be the games final rally that led the Florida Atlantic University womens basketball team to a dramatic 64-58 victory over the University of North Texas on Thursday night in Denton, Tex. The win marked the first road victory of the season and second straight triumph for the Owls, which improved to 6-15 on the season and 3-7 in Sun Belt Conference play. We got great plays from Teri Stamps and Lyrell Barfield tonight, said Chancellor Dugan, FAUs head womens basketball coach. Tonight was a good team win. FAU scored 17 of the games final 22 points with Lyrell Batfield and Vontrice Dennis combining for 11 points during that victorious run. Seven straight points by Barfield tied the game at 56 in the final minutes. Takia Brooks hit a layup to give the Owls the lead for good, and the freshman guard hit clutch free throws down the stretch to seal a FAU victory at North Texas for the second consecutive season both coming on February 3. Takia really did a nice job tonight of protecting the basketball, said Dugan about the player who had a team-best six assists. We were able to beat their press and get easy baskets late in the second half. Barfield paced the Owls offense with a season-high 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-5 from behind the three-point arc. She had 15 of the teams 33 first half points, and hit both of visitors three-pointers over the first 20 minutes. FAU led 33-28 at halftime. Dennis recorded her fourth double-double of the season, tallying 17 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, and Stamps added an important eight points. Denetra Kellum led North Texas with a game-high 25 points and 12 rebounds. The Mean Green fell to 5-19 overall and 2-9 in league games. FAU returns home to play its second televised game of the season on Sunday, February 6, with a battle against rival Florida International University at 3:00 p.m.
