The Florida Atlantic men's basketball team got themselves a player who can score the ball at will, gaining a key transfer in former Colonel guard Leland Walker.
Walker announced his transfer to the Owls on Wednesday evening, ending a two-year stint with the Atlantic Sun's Eastern Kentucky Colonels. In 68 games and 32 starts, he averaged 12.1 points, 3.3 assists, and 2.5 rebounds on 41.2% shooting from the field and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc.
He earned First Team All-ASUN honors and averaged 15.4 points and 4.1 assists during the 2023-24 season. Walker was the second leading scorer for the team this past season, where they placed first in the conference during the regular season.
He was 10th in the ASUN in scoring, fourth in free throw percentage, sixth in assists, seventh in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.64) and 11th in field goal percentage. He scored a career-best 29 points in a win over North Florida (Jan. 27), and even broke the EKU single game record with 16 assists against Wilberforce (Nov. 10).
Walker was the first ever four-star recruit EKU picked up and was ranked the 39th best point guard in the nation in high school. Once he arrived at EKU, he made an immediate impact on the team, playing in 37 games in his first year and was voted best incoming freshman in the ASUN Conference by CBB Nation.
He played at Hargrave Military Academy during the 2021-22 season, helping the Tigers to a 37-5 record while averaging 16 points, seven assists, five rebounds and one steal per game.
Walker finished high school ranked as a three-star recruit with an 84 score on 247Sports, being listed as the 11th-best player in the state of Virginia and the 37th-best combo guard in his class. He had offers from Purdue, Xavier, DePaul, and Providence before committing to Eastern Kentucky on February 2022.
Having entered the portal on March 19th, his rating rose up to an 89 score. He ranked as the 26th-best combo guard in the country and the 206th-best player overall.
