Committing to the Owls on Saturday evening, Diop presents himself as a long-term option for the Owls to develop and utilize his unique skillset to the program's benefit at the age of 18.
Underrated yet assertive at the off-guard position, Diop seamlessly fits alongside dominant big men and a team known for its ball movement. Standing at 6-foot-7, the Senegalese shooting guard boasts a big wingspan of 7'3", quick hands, and agile hip mobility, although official measurements are unavailable.
For many observers, Diop burst onto the scene last fall during the Road to BAL, a qualifying tournament for the Basketball Africa League. In two out of three games, he averaged 18 points on 62% shooting against seasoned veterans.
His unique blend of scoring abilities allows him to excel at all five levels, whether creating his own shot in isolation or utilizing on and off-ball screens.
This offensive versatility makes him a valuable asset, capable of functioning as a traditional catch-and-shoot player who exploits screens or as a playmaker initiating the offense. Additionally, he exhibits solid playmaking instincts, facilitating scoring opportunities for his teammates within the flow of the game.
On the defensive end, Diop displays commendable effort, using his length to disrupt smaller guards, whether containing penetration or making chase-down blocks. However, an area for improvement could be handling primary defensive assignments. Content to operate as the third option alongside two primary scorers, he remains effective within the defensive scheme.
His lethal shooting and defensive prowess as a dual threat on the court can greatly benefit the Owls when he arrives for the 2024-25 season, placing himself as a name to keep an eye on while he develops as a player under coach Jakus.
