Head coach Tom Herman, Defensive coordinator Roc Bellantoni, and the Florida Atlantic football team continues to bolster the future depth of the linebacker unit, garnering a talented prospect who is highly rated on their list in Hector Chavez, announcing his commitment to the Owls on Friday afternoon.
Chavez followed up on a breakout sophomore season and led the Explorers to their second consecutive state championship. As a result, Chavez won Miami Herald's 4M-3M Defensive Players of the Year.
On a defense with no shortage of standouts, Chavez was the most consistent throughout the season, finishing with a team-high 80 tackles including 11 for loss to go along with an interception, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Chavez capped his season with a game-high eight tackles and a rushing touchdown on offense that started Columbus’ dominant performance in a 38-19 win over Jacksonville Mandarin in the 4M state final.
A dynamic force on the field, Chavez epitomizes speed and relentless energy. With an aggressive play style and exceptional tackling skills, he excels at disrupting plays in the backfield, delivering bone-crushing hits that leave a mark.
His prowess also extends to open-field tackles, where he consistently shuts down opposing offenses with precision and determination.
Rated as a three-star linebacker on Rivals, Chavez chose the Owls over enticing offers from multiple FBS schools such as Miami, Syracuse and Liberty.
Chavez is the fourth member of the Owls' 2025 class, and also the third linebacker, joining Seth Chestnut and Nigel Nelson.
