FAU Comes From Behind In 10-7 Victory Over Pittsburgh

// // Mesa and Scheffler each tally three RBI in the victory Florida Atlantic erased a 7-2 sixth inning deficit to defeat Pittsburgh 10-7 on Wednesday afternoon at FAU Baseball Stadium. “It was a great team win,” said head coach John McCormack. “A lot of guys contributed and I’m happy we were able to complete the comeback.” R.J. Alvarez got the start for FAU and pitched two innings before giving way to the rest of the bullpen. In total, six relievers saw action in the game for the Owls including Alvarez, Kenny Gray, Jason Boyer, Lou Morey, Ryan Bernal and Andy Mee. The Owls (6-4) trailed 7-2 entering the bottom of the sixth when Dan Scheffler led things off with a double followed by two walks to load the bases for Anthony Mesa. After battling off several pitches in a 3-2 count, Mesa ripped a bases-clearing RBI double down the left field line that made the score 7-5. “Mesa continues to carry this team,” said McCormack. “I’m not sure where we would be right now without him.” Two batters later, Sean Bukovich hit a sharp ground ball to short that was misplayed by the shortstop Danny Lopez and caromed into left field for a base hit. Both Mesa and Mike Albaladejo touched the plate to even the score at 7-7. Bernal (1-0) came in for relief in the seventh inning and pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win. Mee slammed the door in the ninth for his first save of the season. The Panthers (7-4) received 5.2 innings from starter from Josh Smith who received a no decision. The right-hander gave up five of his six earned runs in the sixth inning while giving up six hits and five walks with five strikeouts. The Owls will hit the road and begin a three-game series against Troy this weekend in the Sun Belt opener for both teams. Friday’s game will begin at 7:00 p.m. and can be heard on fausports.com .
