All Saints Day

Owls toss up 4-of-21 performance from long range in loss to Siena Florida Atlantic had its three game win streak snapped tonight, falling 72-69 to Siena (3-6, 1-1) at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY. The Owls’ bench poured in a season high 38 points, surpassing the starters, but three point shooting was dismal as FAU (6-5) shot just 19.0% from behind the arc. Shavar Richardson (photo) was 7-of-16, for 16 points, to lead the Owls. “We just didn’t have enough guys show up tonight”, said Coach Mike Jarvis. “To win on the road everybody’s got to come and be ready to play.” First half action saw multiple lead changes and an eventual 37-31 advantage for the Saints. Siena would extend that margin to 10 in the second period before a dunk by Pablo Bertone pulled FAU to within three at 44-41. Capitalizing on a Florida Atlantic dry spell thereafter, the Saints embarked on a 22-10 run to assume their largest lead of the night at 66-51 with less than six minutes to play. But the Owls showed valiant effort, closing the gap to two points with under a minute to go after a basket by Alex Tucker. Milking the clock, Siena would benefit off a questionable whistle as a stumbling Jonathan Breeden drew apparent contact from Tucker. Breeden hit one of two at the line, and the Owls called time with :17 remaining to draw up a play. Whether meant for a three point attempt or not, FAU was forced to settle for a Richardson lay-up with just four ticks showing, and trailed by one. With the Owls forced to foul afterwards, the Saints would hit both free throws to tally the final score. Ryan Rossiter led all scorers with 27 points for Siena. Brett Royster recorded a season high seven blocks while Kore White, who was in foul trouble most of the night, was held to just two points for the Owls. “Kore wasn’t here tonight so we’re expecting a big game out of him at Troy”, said Jarvis.
